Luminescence

I began with the idea of memory. How does water appear when you close your eyes and try to recall it? It isn’t exact or fixed, but soft, distorted, and blended. Maybe different bodies of water all blend together as one. Water is a difficult subject to capture, and I’ve stopped trying to define it perfectly. I used to be fixated on painting things exactly as they were, worrying over precise colour and proportion. But after completing my previous project, Disturbed, I realised that painting what I imagined to be there instead of what actually was released me from my obsession with perfection. Since then, a subject I’d never explored has become a new fixation. With this work, I wanted to go bigger, push further, simply paint whatever I wanted wherever I felt it was needed. This time, I rendered my work based off memory, not a reference. As I began painting, I saw my emotions reflected through my work. There are two sections to this piece: one messy and undefined, the other consistent and neat. Throughout the journey of launching my art page and building my business, I’ve found myself feeling much the same. It’s been unpredictable and, at times, disappointing, but that doesn’t take away from the small, consistent wins along the way. Introducing my new favourite: Luminescence.
